Support Centre NBN Services Connecting Your NBN Service

Connecting Your NBN Service

1. Order Your NBN Service

First things first, you'll need to place an order for your new NBN connection.

2. Connect Your Router

The steps to connect your router will vary depending on your access technology. For detailed steps, please choose your nbn technology type:

Fibre to the Premises (FTTP)
  1. Locate your nbn connection box
The nbn connection box is installed by nbn the first time a service is ordered and provides connectivity to the wider fibre network. It'll be installed close to a power point, and look like the below:
  2. Check your order confirmation for which port to use
The nbn connection box allows for up to 4 internet connections to be active, utilising 4 ports on the bottom of the connection box. Refer to your setup email from us for which port you'll need to connect to.
  3. Remove the connection box cover
To remove the cover, gently press the two clips on the bottom of the cover, then lift the cover up at an angle
  4. Locate the UNI-D port we indicated and connect your ethernet cable. Take care not to unplug any other cables.
  5. Connect the other end of the ethernet cable to the back of your router.
While the port location on each router is different, it should be labelled WAN or Internet
  6. Once your router has been powered up, confirm the lights on the nbn connection box
The Power and Optical lights should be green. The UNI-D light of the port you just connected should be either green or orange.
  7. Replace the nbn connection box cover, ensuring the clips click back into place.
  8. Connect your devices to the LAN ports of your modem/router, or by WiFi with the details normally printed on the rear of the router.
  9. Configure your router per the below.

Fibre to the Curb (FTTC)
  1. Plug in your nbn connection box.
Connect the supplied power cable first, then connect the supplied telephone cable to the phone wall socket. Ensure you remove any ADSL splitters or filters.
  2. Switch on power to the nbn connection box
The lights on top of the nbn connection box will light up. Wait until the DSL, Connection and Power lights are all solid before continuing, which may take up to 20 minutes.
  3. Once the lights match the above, connect your ethernet cable to the Gateway port on the nbn connection box.
  4. Connect the other end of the ethernet cable to the back of your router.
While the port location on each router is different, it should be labelled WAN or Internet
  5. Connect your devices to the LAN ports of your modem/router, or by WiFi with the details normally printed on the rear of the router.
  6. Configure your router per the below.
Fibre to the Node (FTTN)
  1. Connect your modem/router to your phone wall socket, ensuring you have removed any ADSL splitters or filters.
While the port label may vary on different routers, it should be labelled DSL or vDSL
  2. Connect your router's power and switch it on
  3. Connect your devices to the LAN ports of your modem/router, or by WiFi with the details normally printed on the rear of the router.
  4. Configure your router as below.
Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC)

  2. Check your order confirmation for which port to use

  3. Locate the UNI-D port we indicated and connect your ethernet cable. Take care not to unplug any other cables.
  4. Connect the other end of the ethernet cable to the back of your router.
While the port location on each router is different, it should be labelled WAN or Internet

The Power, Status and ODU lights should be green, and the signal level indicators illuminated.

  6. Connect your devices to the LAN ports on your router, or by WiFi with the details normally printed on the rear of the router.

  7. Configure your router per the below.

3. Configure Your Router

MaxoTel's NBN services utilise IPoE - this means you do not need to specify a username or password to connect.

If your router was previously used with a provide that required a username and password, you may need to switch it over to IPoE or Auto.

As each router's interface is different, the following instructions may not exactly fit your device. The menu options and fields should be similar but if you're not sure, check your modem/router's setup guide.

Note that we recommend completing this configuration from your computer, rather than a mobile phone.

  1. Ensure your computer is connected to your router, either through a LAN port on the rear of your router (recommended) or by WiFi. Your WiFi details are normally printed on the rear of the router.
  2. Connect to your router's setup page by following the information on the back of your router or contained within your router's setup guide.
  3. Locate the Internet Setup page and look for the Username and Password fields.
  4. Set the connection type to IPoE or Automatic, then click Save or Apply.
  5. Allow a minute or so for your router to apply the new details and your internet should be ready to go.
